Notes:

• My Japanese is very poor. So take my translations with a grain of salt. There are a few parts I did not know how to translate, so I guessed at the meaning. Those parts are marked with an (*). Just keep in mind these are far from 100% correct or perfect. If you see a translation mistake, please let me know.

• The following should be read with manga in hand. These are only the dialogue. There are no mentions of scene changes, and very little description of action. So you may be confused if you don't have the manga in front of you.

[101]
Voice:
Unten!
You are suspected of conspiring with Japan to assassinate the President.
Give yourself up peacefully!
Unten:
I'm escaping with this girl as my hostage.
Lower the lifeboat!
Man:
Unten-san.
Unten:
You all knew nothing,
You were just following my orders.
Tell the Vice President that and you should be okay.
[102]
Shuri:
What?!
Unten took Sarasa hostage...
...and escaped?!
[103]
Verdigris Chapter 9 - Always
Nakijin:
Brother...!
[104]
Unten:
I have food stored onboard.
Let's eat.
Sarasa:
Why did you run?
<- Rope's already untied
Unten:
Uh?
Sarasa:
The President told me...
...you only allied with Japan...
Sarasa:
...in order to protect Okinawa.
Why can't you tell everyone that?
Little Tamu Tamu Time (3)
(Translated by Ruliann Takanashi)
Left:
I always think about this whenever I receive fanletters,
but some write things like "Write me back by so-and-so date"
or "I have an event on so-and-so date so respond by then."
Usually, the letters go through the editors, so I receive them very late.
Tamu:
There's all kinds of letter sets and envelopes.
Right:
Usually it takes around a month, when it's really late, it's about 3 months.
So, I think it's impossible to do those kind of things, sorry!
But if it's something like flowers or raw food, if my editor realizes it,
I think I can get them sooner <3
Oh, no, it's not like I'm being greedy.
Oh thank you for all the presents! (birthday)

[105]
Unten:
Then I would have to tell everyone...
...the President was prepared to lose to Japan.
Unten:
That while I was talking about protecting Okinawa,
...I was actually doing the opposite. I was actually conspiring...
Unten:
...along with Japan.
Sarasa:
But...
Sarasa:
But this way...
...you'll be...
[106]
Sarasa:
...the only villain.
You be hunted down...
...as the country's only cowardly traitor...!
Sarasa:
Is that okay with you?
Sarasa:
To be misunderstood by everyone.
Sarasa:
Is that okay with you?!
Unten:
...Eat your food then go to asleep.
The ship still has a ways to go.
Kinjô:
Eeh.
Where did Unten go?
Man:
I don't know. I just know his boat headed south.
Shuri:
Nakijin.
Do you know where your brother went?
Where did he go?!
[107]
Shuri:
If anything happens to Sarasa,
...I swear I'm going to declare war on Okinawa!
Yûna:
Shuri, don't be so hard on Nakijin.
Shuri:
Shut up!
Yûna:
What was that?
Nakijin:
...omote.
Shuri:
What?!
Nakijin:
He's going to... Iriomote.
Nakijin:
That's where... my father's cenotaph is...
[108]
Narration:
On the southern end...
...is Iriomote Island——
Narration:
The whole island is covered by a virgin forest.
It's a subtropical mountain zone.
Narration:
Since ancient times,
...it has been represented by the mangrove swamps.
[109]
Narration:
It is a natural treasure.
Unten:
This island is uninhabited now.
Unten:
It's like Okinawa, but it's not Okinawa.
It's an island of mystery.
[110]
Unten:
Later on, let's catch some fish and cook them.
There are snakes in the forest, so be careful.
Unten:
I won't lose to Nakijin when it comes to cooking.
Unten:
Gasan crabs sounds good right now.
Coconut crabs would be nice too.
But you can get stomach aches if you eat too many.
Sarasa:
That dour expression has disappeared from Unten's face.
He's happy?
Sarasa:
Okinawa is protected.
So he's happy now...?
Even though he'll be on the run from now on...?!
[111]
Turtle:
Humans?
Voice:
Oh, a turtle.
Unten:
They say when you see a turtle here, it's going to rain.
So let's hurry.
Sarasa:
Hurry...?
Unten:
Truth be told,
...I'm actually going to visit my father's grave.
Sorry about this.
Unten:
My father was a sailor on a trade ship.
The ship was hit by a storm and sunk around here.
Unten:
His body was never found.
[112]
Unten:
Even though there's another grave on Okinawa,
...I consider this to be his true grave.
Unten:
Father,
...Okinawa is finally protected.
Unten:
I couldn't beat the President afterall.
Unten:
This cenotaph was made to face Okinawa.
Unten:
Even though you can't see the island from here...
...it will always...
...look towards Okinawa.

A day in the life of Asagi

Noon

For some reason, he really likes to cook.
"I ought to put a little poison in this, heh heh."
He likes to say that while he's cooking.

TAMU
Unten:
Sarasa... is it?
I'm sorry to make you go through this.
Unten:
Once the rain stops,
...I'll take you to Ishigaki Island.
Sarasa:
What about you?
Delicious crab.
Yummy.
What will you do then?
Unten:
Well,
I'd be happy to live here.
Unten:
But I'll probably head to a foreign country somewhere.
Just like my namesake, I'll leave my fate (Un) to the heavens (Ten).
[114]
Unten:
No matter where I end up,
...I will always look toward Okinawa.
Unten:
Just like that cenotaph.
Sarasa:
Even though he can never return,
...this man...
...still truly loves...
...his country.
Sarasa:
Yet...
Yet...
Unten:
You think I drew a poor lot,
...don't you?
Sarasa:
Yes.
Unten:
But, I chose it for myself.
[115]
Unten:
I yearned to be like President Asato.
I wanted to become a politician...
Unten:
...and surpass him one day...
Unten:
If I can beat him...
Unten:
...even if it means killing him,
...then I don't see anything wrong with what I've done.
Unten:
But it wasn't good enough.
I still couldn't beat him.
Unten:
And so the loser shall leave.*
Sarasa:
...What about your mother?
Will you see her again?
Unten:
She has Nakijin.
That kid will soon become a grown up.
[116]
Sarasa:
My chest...
...hurts...
Unten:
Isn't the crab good?
Help yourself with the roast fish.
Sarasa:
It hurts...
Sarasa:
I wonder why.
I feel like...
Sarasa:
...I really want to listen...
...to what this man...
...has to say...
[117]
Unten:
...Eh?
Sarasa:
In Japan...
...there's someone called Tatara.
Unten:
Ah... I've heard of that name.
The one who is rebelling against the Emperor...
Sarasa:
That Tatara...
...is me.
Unten:
...
No kidding.
You don't look a thing like...
Sarasa:
But...
...I'm not the real Tatara.
[118]
Sarasa:
Tatara is my twin brother.
Sarasa:
When my brother was killed by the royal family,
...I became his substitute.
Sarasa:
Why...
...am I telling this man...
Sarasa:
I deceived everyone.
Sarasa:
...these things?
Sarasa:
Why?
Sarasa:
I've gathered many people with the name Tatara.
But me being Tatara, the Child of Destiny,
...is a complete lie.
Sarasa:
I've lied to everyone...
...to make them fight.
[119]
Sarasa:
I want to tell the truth.
Sarasa:
But...
...how can I tell everyone the truth now...
Unten:
You're afraid... of telling them?
Unten:
Afraid that everyone will be angry and desert you...?
Unten:
You think this way,
...because you don't have any faith in them.
[120]
Unten:
If someone...
...wants take a secret to his grave,
...he's free to do so.
Unten:
But if you want to trust in others,
...to have them trust you,
Unten:
...and all fight together...
If you don't tell them the truth, then...
Sarasa:
But what if they decide to leave me,
...then everyone will know I'm just an ordinary kid.
Unten:
You're afraid of that?
Are they the type of people who would desert you?
Unten:
You should learn to trust them first.
[121]
Sarasa:
He's right.
The one who doesn't have faith is me.
Sarasa:
Will everyone be angry with me for deceiving them?
Will they leave me?
Sarasa:
What will everyone think of me...?!
What do I have to be afraid of?!
Unten:
Now, let's eat.
I picked out all the bones for you.
[122]
Sarasa:
Thank you very much.
When I get back,
...I'm going to tell everyone the truth.
Voice:
Looks like the rain stopped.
[123]
Unten:
Watch out!
Sarasa:
This is...!
[125]
Sarasa:
The President's assassin.
The last Torinoko brother...!
Unten:
Kinarigumo...
You...
Kinarigumo:
The target has changed.
Japan ordered to get rid of you.
Sarasa:
Wh...
Why you—
[126]
Kinarigumo:
Oya.
You're that fellow from the Gyokusen Grotto.
I almost didn't recognize you.
Kinarigumo:
I don't wish to fight you.
Kinarigumo:
Farewell.
Sarasa:
Wait—
Sarasa:
Unten-san.
[127]
Sarasa:
Unten-san.
Unten:
They say...
...an utopia...
...lies beyond the sea.
Unten:
But...
...for me...
[128]
Unten:
Okinawa...
...is the utopia.
Sarasa:
Unten-san.
Don't move.
I'll go call for help...
Sarasa:
You can't die without...
...seeing someone again.
Sarasa:
It's no good.
I'm the only one here.
Sarasa:
Nakijin.
You still have to talk to Nakijin.
Sarasa:
I've only got my strength.
Sarasa:
Unten-san.
[129]
Unten:
Take me someplace...
...where I can see Okinawa...
Sarasa:
But you can't see Okinawa from here...
Unten:
A beautiful...
...and warm country.
Not just the people...
Unten:
...but the flowers and birds...
...are tender-hearted too...
Unten:
Always...
Unten:
...Ahh...
[130 & 131]
Unten:
...look at...
...Okinawa...
[132]
Shuri:
Sarasa!
Nakijin:
Brother...?
Nakijin:
Brother!
[133]
Sarasa:
Nakijin...
Your brother...
Sarasa:
Your brother...
...really loved...
...Okinawa.
Nakijin:
Brother...!
[134]
Song:
——To the east, west, south, and north...
On the beach of sparkling sand...
"Please come back safe" prayed the Onaris
Song:
——The clear blue ocean that spreads throughout...
Song:
The waves that draw beside me...
Please send back a good reply...
Song:
The wind whistles through the air...
It whistles a faraway melody——
Asato:
We may have borrowed foreign powers this one time,
...but Japan will come again.
Shuri:
I won't let that happen.
I'm not going to give Japan any free time to rest.
[135]
Shuri:
That's why I need Yûna with me,
...Mr. President,
Song:
——Even in the land painted in crimson...
The emerald green breath comes...
Song:
The sky-colored sky and the white clouds...
The blossoming Yûna...
Yûna:
I'll come back safe.
Song:
The wind whistles through the air...
It whistles a faraway melody...
Nakijin's Mom:
Nakijin, don't you want to go?
Were you just crying?
Nakijin:
Mother...
Nakijin's Mom:
For Okinawa's sake,
...you should go.
[136]
Sarasa:
Shuri, what are you going to do now...?
Shuri:
Well... I guess I'll head over to Shikoku...
...and start from square one.
Shuri:
When the ship leaves tomorrow morning, let's go together.
Shuri:
I still haven't told Sarasa everything.
Shuri:
Not until I regain my power.
Not until I get back on top.
Until then, telling her about my disgraceful past as the Red King...
...will be really hard.
Although I don't know how I can not tell her if we're together.
Sarasa:
...Shuri...
...has to do his own thing...
[137]
Nagi:
Our ship will be leaving tonight,
...because everyone has been waiting for you.
Shuri:
What about my reward, Sarasa?
Sarasa:
Even though the President deserves all the credit.
Sarasa:
Tomorrow.
Tomorrow...
Nakijin:
Brother.
Watch me, Brother.
[138]
Nakijin:
Shuri.
I'm going with you...
...to Japan!
Sarasa:
Farewell Okinawa...
Nagi:
Sarasa... no, Tatara,
...Tôhoku (the Northeast) is waiting for you.
Song:
...It whistles, that man's...
...It whistles, like his voice...
Song:
——To the east, west, south, and north...
On the beach of sparkling sand...
"Please come back safe" prayed the...

(NOTE: That song is an Okinawa-style song called "Paipati Ro-ma — Risoukyou." And it was translated by Ruliann Takahashi, because lyrics are just too much for me to handle ^^; Anyway, the "Yûna" mentioned in the song is an Okinawa flower. But I have no idea who the "Onari" people are so I just left it at that.)
