For the story so far, simply watch all 13 episodes of the anime and then read my summaries of the previous manga chapters. I'm assuming that you're reading this to find out what happens next, so the following are packed with spoilers. Since this page contains some large pictures, please be patient with the slow loading.Where I last left off, Sarasa is racing towards Kazan's burning compound in hope of saving Zaki and Chacha. Along the way, she sees the destruction wrecked by the Red King. ![]() ![]() At this point, she prays to the Nagi tree to give her the strength she needs to save her friends. Back at the burning compound, Zaki is fighting Kazan and tells Chacha to escape. However, her injuries are too serious for her to move by herself. During the fight, Zaki recalls his past with Chacha: how the two of them grew up as children, how Chacha became the leader of the pirates by beating all the other guys, and how his only wish is to always be with her. These thoughts give Zaki the extra strength to defeat Kazan. ![]() After defeating Kazan, Zaki rushes to Chacha. She's still alive, but it's already too late. The buidling is collapsing around them. Zaki and Chacha find themselves trapped on a ledge, with a big chasm separating them from the exit. Zaki is about to give up hope when Sarasa shows up at the door. He quickly jumps up, throws Chacha across the chasm to Sarasa, and falls into the burning fire below. Sarasa takes Chacha outside of the burning building, and Chacha is beside herself with grief over Zaki's selfless sacrifice. At this point, Hijiri's team and Asagi have arrived at the scene. Sarasa leaves Chacha with them, and - to the surprise of everyone present - charges back into the fire with Yato to rescue Zaki. But not before saying a little prayer for her loved ones: "I know no prayers, but... Nagi... Kakujî... Hayato... everybody... Shuri... Dear God, please protect them." Speaking of Shuri, he's taking a break from all the bombings, and gorging himself on a late night snack. ![]() Alas, things may be too late for Kazan. Despite Zaki's bull's eye hit, Kazan still manages to get out of the burning building. At the same time, Chigusa escapes from Kazan's soldiers, steals a sword, and immediately heads back to the flaming scene. Kazan tells Chigusa that Tatara has escaped safely, and asks her to kill him. Chigusa suggests for Kazan to join Tatara's army, but of course he refuses. He intends to remain a Red Army General to the bitter end. At this point, Sakaki enters the scene and informs Kazan of the Red King's pardon. "General. The Red King has pardoned you! Please come back with me! ... You used Tatara's mother in order to capture Tatara, right? The Red King understands!" But Kazan doesn't accept Shuri's forgiveness. "I knew about Tatara's mother. Miss Chigusa has captured my heart. It was my decision. That is no lie. I absolutely, absolutely, did not use Miss Chigusa!!" At this point, Kazan tells Chigusa that he wishes to commit harakiri. It's the only honorable thing left for him to do. He then recalls his past with Shuri. ![]() Now, in order to understand the following scene, you must have some understanding of what harakiri is. Here's a little Japanese cultural lesson: Harakiri, or seppuku, is a ritual suicide. Many warriors consider this the only way to redeem their honor after shameful conduct. The person committing suicide first recites a death-poem, then he makes 3 cuts in his own stomach. The person standing behind him (called kaishaku or his "second") will then chop off his head. As you shall see, Chigusa serves as Kazan's "second," and Kazan does recite a death-poem before dying: I charge up the hills of Adashino. And keep charging. Into the other world. For the Red King." (I think "Adashino" refers to Adashino Nembutsuji, once a common burial ground. It literally means "field of sorrow.") ![]() ![]() Immediately after Kazan's death, rain begins to pour down, slowly dousing all the fires of Motomiya. Meanwhile, all of Sarasa's gang (Hijiri, Hayato, Hisha, Shouta, and Asagi) are waiting for her outside of the collapsed building. Everyone is worried, even Asagi. How can she possibly rescue Zaki from that house of fire? Well, she isn't the main character for nothing. Sure enough, after a while, Sarasa & Yato walks out of the flaming ruins with Zaki's body. Everybody breathes a big sigh of relief, especially when they realize that Zaki is still alive, albeit badly burned. Before the whole gang are able to return to the Tengu Hall, they see a procession of the Red Army approaching. At the head of the procession is the Red King, Shuri. ![]() ![]() ![]() Next Chapter: Premonition Basara is not available in English. What you see here are manga panels I scanned and modified - meaning I erased the Japanese writing and typed in the English translation. Keep in mind I translated this manga chapter myself, so there are bound to be mistakes. But it's all for the fans' enjoyment, and I get no profit whatsoever. It's also tedious work, so I would appreciate it if you don't rip them off and call them your own. |
