ANIME

Basara was a popular manga in Japan, popular enough to get animated. When mangaka Yumi Tamura concluded the main storyline in 1998, production house KSS adapted Basara into an anime titled Legend of Basara. It aired as a late night anime, from April to June of 1998, on the broadcast channel Sun TV. Only 13 episodes were planned, essentially covering the first 5 manga volumes. Had the anime been a hit, more episodes might have been made. But ratings were low, and the show ended at episode 13. Chances of a future sequel are very unlikely.

Legend of Basara has been released on Japanese home video as 13 laserdiscs (1 episode/disc), and 13 VHS tapes. A limited edition region 2 Basara DVD boxset, containing all the episodes + a 60 minute extra, will be coming out in Japan in February 2002. You can order it here until 1/18/2002. This series has not been licensed for an official U.S. release, although fansubs are available.
